Refugee Protection

Canada is a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention on the Rights of Refugees. Canada provides protection to refugees in several ways:

Government Assisted Refugees
Every year, Canada directly sponsors a certain number of refugees overseas for resettlement.

Privately Sponsored Refugees
Sponsorship Agreement holders or private groups may sponsor refugees to be resettled to Canada.

Inland Refugee Claims
This is when the refugees flee directly to Canada and make an official claim for refugee status. This can be done at the point of entry (airport, border, etc) or within Canada. More....
