Before you apply to be a Canadian permanent resident, you will need to choose which immigration program is suitable for you and your family.

There are several categories you can apply to, to be a Canadian permanent resident:

  • Skilled workers and professionals
  • investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed persons
  • Provincial nominees
  • Family sponsorship
  • Quebec-selected skilled workers

Skilled workers and professionals
If you have the education, experience and knowledge of English or French, this is the category that you will choose to apply to, for your Canadian Permanent Residency.

The following are the minimum requirements you will require to apply as a skilled worker or professional:

  • Your work experience must fall under the following Canadian National Occupational Classifications (NOC)
    • Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or
    • Skill Level A (professional occupations) or
    • Skill Level B (technical occupations and skilled trades) investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed persons
  • You should have a minimum of one years full-time, paid experience or the equivalent in part time continuous employment in the above field of work
  • This work experience should have taken place within the last 10 years.

    When applying as a skilled worker or professional, you will be assessed on six selection factors and a point system:

    • Your education
    • Your ability in English or French
    • Your working experience
    • Your age
    • Arranged employment in Canada
    • Your adaptability

    In addition to the above, you will have to pass a medical examination, security and criminal checks. You will also have to show that you have enough funds to support yourself and your dependants after you arrive in Canada.

    Provincial nominees
    If you have the skills, education and work experience needed to make an immediate economic contribution to a province or territory, then this is the category that you will apply to. Every province will consider your application based on its immigration needs. You will first have to apply to the province you wish to settle and complete its provincial nomination process. Applying to immigrate to Canada is pretty easy.

    Investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed persons
    Canada needs experienced entrepreneurs and business people to participate in its already successful economy. To qualify as a business immigrant one needs to make a Can$400,000 investment. You can also qualify if you already own and manage a business in Canada. As a business immigrant, you can choose to apply to any of the following classes:

    Family sponsorship
    The Canadian government believes in re-uniting its citizens or permanent residents with their families. For this reason therefore, you can sponsor your spouse, or partner, dependent children including adopted children or other eligible relatives to become permanent resident.

    When you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you must ensure that you support that relative financially when he or she arrives so that they do not seek financial assistance from the government.

    There are two processes for sponsoring your family: One process is used to sponsor your spouse, partner and or dependent children. The other process is used to sponsor other eligible relatives

    Quebec-selected skilled workers

    If you decide to come to Canada as a Quebec selected skilled worker, you will have to apply to the Quebec government for a certificate of selection. This is an official document that shows that you have been accepted to Quebec by the Government of Quebec.
