Primary documents
When applying for your Social Insurance Number (SIN), Service Canada will require to see an original copy of your primary documents that has your name and status in Canada.
Example of some of the primary documents include:
- Certificate of Birth or Birth Certificate issues in Canada
- Certificate of Canadian Citizenship
- Certificate of Indian status***
- Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad
- Confirmation of Permanent Residence including the issued visa in your passport
- Diplomatic Identity card and note of permission of employment
- Permanent Resident Card
- Record of landing
- Study permit**
- Visitor record indicating you are eligible to work in Canada
- work permit
Supporting Documents
This is a legal document that indicates your current name. The supporting documents must be in French or English.
Example of the supporting documents include:
- Certificate of Marriage
- Legal change of name document
- Adoption order
- Notarial Certificate (Notarial Adoption Certificate)
- Request to amend record of landing
- Confirmation of Permanent Residence
** You might also require a contract of employment from the school or employer in school where you intend to work
