Social Insurance Number

Once of the first things you will want to do once you get to Canada is applying for your Social Insurance Number (SIN). Your Social Insurance Number is a 9-digit number that is used to identify people who earn money through work, or contribute to the pension plans and use government services. You will need your SIN to work in Canada or receive government benefits.

To apply for your Social Insurance Number, you will have to contact / visit a Service Canada office (Human Resources Centre).

If you will be applying at a Service Canada office, you will require an official document that proves your identity and status in Canada. If you've changed your name, you will also have to show a supporting document. If you receive a SIN number starting with 9, your SIN card will also include an expiry date.
